Eyelid ptosis

Eyelid drooping after Botox injections: is surgery needed?

Can Botox cause eyelid drooping? Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary explains why the eyelid can droop after Botox and when surgery should be considered.

Some patients notice a slight droop in one eyelid compared with the other, and on examination the forehead and brow move differently on the two sides. The cause is often a recent Botox injection.

Why does the eyelid droop after Botox?

When Botox is injected into the forehead or brow, some of it can spread to the muscle that lifts the eyelid. This muscle weakens temporarily and a partial droop appears.

Should I have eyelid lift surgery?

Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary advises against eyelid lift surgery while the effect of Botox is still present. It is better to wait about 3 months, until the body absorbs the Botox and the muscle regains its strength, then reassess the eyelid and decide.

Tip: if you notice your eyelid drooping after Botox, tell your doctor when you had your last injection, because this information changes the whole treatment plan.
