Brow ptosis and its effect on eyelid shape and cosmetic surgery
Why do the two eyelids sometimes look different after surgery? Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary explains how a drooping brow relates to upper eyelid sagging and how it is treated.
Sometimes a patient comes for upper blepharoplasty, and on examination Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary finds that one brow is lower than the other. This drooping brow is part of the cause of the sagging skin, so one eyelid looks more hooded than the other.
Why does brow ptosis need to be diagnosed before surgery?
If only the excess skin is removed and the eyelid muscles are strengthened, the two eyes will not look fully symmetrical, because there is another cause: the drooping brow.
Treatment steps
- Lifting and supporting the drooping brow to the level of the other brow.
- Then upper blepharoplasty: removing excess skin and strengthening the muscles.
The patient usually returns to work after one week to ten days, with the brow and the eyelid treated together.
