Dryness and burning after blepharoplasty
Can blepharoplasty cause dry, burning eyes? Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary explains why, how long it lasts and how it is treated.
Some patients complain of burning or dry eyes after upper or lower blepharoplasty. Is this related to the operation?
Why does dry eye happen after blepharoplasty?
During blepharoplasty a small part of the superficial eyelid muscle is removed, and its sensation decreases temporarily. These muscles help stimulate the tear gland, and the oil glands also produce less after the operation, so the eye feels dry and burns.
Is the dryness permanent?
No. Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary confirms that it is temporary, usually improving within two to three weeks, as the nerves and the muscle recover and the tear gland returns to normal.
What should I do in the meantime?
Use lubricating drops (artificial tears) until the dryness improves, then stop them. If the burning continues or gets worse, follow up with your doctor.
