Eye orbit

How do I know if I have a tumor in the eye orbit?

What are the signs of an orbital tumor, and how is it diagnosed and treated? Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary explains the symptoms and the treatment steps.

One of the questions Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary is asked is: how do I know if I have a tumor in the eye orbit?

Symptoms of an orbital tumor

  1. Bulging of the eye.
  2. An eyelid that is abnormally retracted compared with the other eyelid.
  3. Clear blurring of vision.

Does every eyelid swelling mean a tumor?

No. Diagnosis is made with a CT scan or an MRI of the orbit.

Treatment

If a tumor is confirmed, it is removed surgically and analyzed to determine its type. Most orbital tumors are benign, and after removal:

  • The bulging disappears.
  • The eyelid returns to its normal position.
  • Vision and double vision improve.
  • The patient returns to work after about a week.

In a very high percentage of cases, if the tumor is completely removed, no further treatment is needed.
