Orbital fractures: symptoms and treatment
What are the symptoms of an orbital fracture and how is it treated? Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary explains implant repair through a hidden internal incision.
An orbital fracture usually affects the floor of the eye socket, as a result of an accident or a violent sport such as boxing.
Symptoms
- Double vision.
- Swelling of the eyelids.
- The eye may look smaller or more sunken than the other eye.
Treatment
Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary returns the muscle to its place, then places an implant to repair the fracture. There are two main types of implant, titanium and coral, and Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary prefers the coral implant because it is the closest to natural bone. The operation is done through a hidden internal cosmetic incision.
After surgery
- Bruising and swelling for about a week, improving with cold then warm compresses.
- Double vision disappears gradually, and the eye returns to its normal position.
- The patient returns to normal life within about a week.
