Repeated colds and their effect on the eye
Do repeated colds affect the eye? Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary explains how a sinus infection can spread to the eye orbit, its symptoms and its treatment.
Repeated colds become more common in winter and can cause sinusitis. The sinuses surround the eye orbit, the cavity that contains the eye and its structures.
How do repeated colds affect the eye?
A sinus infection, whether fungal or bacterial, can spread into the orbit and cause:
- Bulging of the eye.
- Inflammation and swelling of the eyelids.
- Inflammation of the eye muscles and double vision.
- Redness of the eye.
Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary warns that this stage is serious, not minor.
Treatment
- See an ear, nose and throat doctor to treat the cold and the sinuses.
- Warm water compresses.
- In the early stage of orbital inflammation: antibiotic tablets or injections.
- In advanced cases: sinus surgery to drain the pus and protect the eye and vision.
So do not let a cold drag on for a long time, because its complications can reach the eye.
