Abstract

To find out whether the off-label use of Lipostabil (phosphatidylcholine) is as effective as advertised for the nonsurgical treatment of bulging lower eyelid fat pads.

This is a pilot, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, comparative, single-center study of 45 patients. In each patient, one lower eyelid was injected with 0.5 ml of Lipostabil, while the other lower eyelid was injected with the same volume of isotonic saline for comparison.

Twenty-three patients completed the study. Three independent masked assessors evaluated photographs taken before and after treatment to determine the change in lower eyelid fullness.

Results

In most cases, the assessors could not reliably distinguish between the eyelids treated with Lipostabil and those treated with saline, nor could they reliably distinguish between photographs taken before and after treatment.

Conclusion

The study did not show a clear improvement in lower eyelid prominence or fullness after repeated injections using the study protocol. The researchers recommended further studies to determine the effectiveness of phosphatidylcholine and the role of dosage in treating prominent lower eyelid fat pads.
