Abstract

The study aimed to highlight primary squamous cell carcinoma arising within the eye orbit, an extremely rare malignant tumor, by presenting a clinical case and a systematic review of the published literature on the disease.

The researchers reviewed the published medical literature to identify reported cases of this cancer within the orbit, excluding cases affecting the surface of the eye or the eyelid skin.

Results

The review showed that primary squamous cell carcinoma of the orbit is extremely rare: the researchers identified ten published cases in the literature reviewed, including two atypical cases that occurred after retinal surgery. The disease may present with non-specific symptoms such as headache, facial pain, numbness and double vision, and the tumor can affect different structures within the orbit, including the extraocular muscles and the lacrimal gland. The study also noted that there is no standard, established treatment protocol for this rare tumor.

Conclusion

The study stresses the importance of being aware of rare malignant tumors that can affect the eye orbit, given their varied symptoms and the difficulty of diagnosis from symptoms alone. It also highlights the importance of careful clinical and diagnostic assessment, bearing in mind that some squamous cell carcinomas may extend into the orbit from neighboring areas.
