Thyroid and the eye

Does removing the thyroid gland treat eye bulging?

Does thyroidectomy improve eye bulging? Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary answers and explains what really reduces the effect of the thyroid on the eye.

Many patients ask: thyroid doctors advise me to remove the gland — will my eye bulging and eyelid swelling improve after the operation?

The answer: not directly

Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary explains that eye problems happen because the immune system attacks the thyroid and the eye tissues together. Even after the gland is removed, the immune system has already learned to recognize the eye tissues and can continue to attack them.

What reduces the effect of the thyroid on the eye?

The key condition, whether or not the gland is removed, is keeping thyroid hormones regularly and steadily controlled. This prevents the immune system from flaring, reduces fluid buildup in the orbit, and so reduces eye bulging.
