Skin growths on the eyelids: types and removal

What types of skin growths appear on the eyelids and how are they removed? Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary explains removal by laser or with cosmetic stitches.

Skin growths on the eyelids are a common complaint, and their type depends on their cause.

Types

  • Growths caused by blocked glands: sweat or oil glands at the edge of the upper or lower eyelid.
  • Growths caused by excess keratin: in the surface skin cells, forming a bump or skin tag.

Are skin growths dangerous?

They bother the patient cosmetically, and if they grow they can cast a shadow in the field of vision.

Removal

  • Small growths: removed by laser cautery without stitches.
  • Large or multiple growths: removed surgically with cosmetic stitches that do not show.

In both cases the patient goes home the same day. Dr. Mahmoud El Samkary advises not to wait until the growths become larger or more numerous.
